I Finally Put My Jeans On

Someone once said to me 9 months on, 9 months off when it comes to pregnancy weight. You have 9 months to grow a baby inside of you and gain whatever weight it takes to ensure a healthy pregnancy, but you can then have 9 months to get that weight back off. So when Cam was born at 7 months I was like, well darn, now I only have 7 months to get this baby weight off (and lucky me – I didn’t even get to my “huge” weight gaining weeks like I did with Capri). Well folks, Cam is now 8 months old and today I got out of the stretchy yoga pants and finally put on my pre-pregnancy jeans.

The outcome?

A couple pairs fit, a couple pairs didn’t. I wouldn’t say it was bad, but I still have a ways to go. But why do we put ourselves through this as women, as mothers?

Capri is my three year old and she looks at herself in the mirror and tells me how pretty her hair is, how nice her clothes look and how tall she is. I usually look in the mirror and think that my hair needs washed and cut, that my boobs looked nicer a month ago when I was still exclusively nursing and that my baby pouch is still there. I wish we could all think like my three year old.
So today, when I finally put on my jeans, I thought about the positives and looked at myself like she looks at me. My hair got washed last night and at least it was brushed! I put a little make up on, that was nice, and you know what, I squeezed into those couple pairs of jeans, but at least some of them fit!

I am human. I like food. I especially like dessert. I am not a robot. I am not going to not have cake because it is 300+ extra calories that “I don’t need.” Screw it. Life is short. Someday I may fit into ALL of my pre-pregnancy jeans, but you know what, I like my yoga pants and I like the jeans that do fit.

My message here is to be choosy about the right things in life. Choose to be happy. Don’t regret not having that piece of cake that you saw while you were out for a night on the town. Do what makes you happy because your children aren’t going to see that piece of cake on your hips. They are just going to feel their arms wrapped around you.

So tomorrow, I’m going to put my yoga pants back on. And maybe in a couple more months I’ll try on my jeans again. But it won’t be because I stressed myself out intentionally trying to fit into a pair of jeans. It will be because it just happened. It happened because I was outside running around with my kids, playing with the exercise ball in the house and doing yoga moves in the living room. I will put my jeans back on again!

How long did it take you to be able to be comfortable in your pre-pregnancy jeans?

  1. As women we put a lot of pressure on ourselves and when you're a mother, I can't even imagine how much more pressure you feel. I think you've got a great attitude, focussing on being a present mother and on your children is what's really important, not a pair of jeans :)

    1. Thank you so much and I agree. Just being present and focusing on my kids is what is important. Maybe when they are grown up and out of the house I'll actually hit up the real gym ;)

  2. I have gotten rid of a bunch of my pre pregnancy jeans. I really care about comfort and ease of movement more than fashion at this point!

    1. Girl I am with you on the comfort level. And us moms need to be able to move fast and jeans just don't move like yoga pants do!

  4. At a girl! I am hoping to fit in my jeans again but I love your attitude and I try to live that way myself although there are times that I am harsh on myself. This is a great reminder and I thank you for that reminder.

    1. I am glad that you gave this a read. Don't push yourself too hard to fit into those jeans again. You are the only one looking at the jeans...your kids are just loving you the way you are!

  5. This is an awesome attitude to have. Pregnancy brings a lot of changes and sometimes it's best to greet them with positivity.

  7. If you ever feel bad about how you look, just ask your kids, they will tell you how you're the most beautiful girl in the world. I love that about them, they are the best when it comes to pep talk. I'm glad you don't put pressure on yourself anymore. Eat that cake and be happy about it.

    1. What great advice! My hair is just a disaster this morning but Capri was playing with it and told me how pretty it was. Love that!

  8. It has taken me a long time to get used to my post baby body. While I have lost most of the weight, it is still different, but I have my son and that is all I could ask for.

  11. I wish that I could look at myself the way your three year old does, as well!! I don't know why we women put so much pressure on ourselves, but it is something that I struggle with on a daily basis.

  12. I love your attitude! I haven't worn jeans in so long I can't even remember. I've had 6 babies, and am now pregnant with 7th. My body will never be the same as it once was! - Jeanine

    1. Jeanine! 6 kids and 1 to come!! Bless your heart, for real! I am so glad we are done with having kids, lol. I love mine to pieces but I don't want to go through teething again, potty training, sleepless nights and so on. You are probably a pro at everything by now.

  14. I love your attitude. It took me quite a while. My kids are grown up now and I may not be the weight I want to be, but I look at my body now as a trophy for having two wonderful kids.

  15. I've not been pregnant but I've heard my friends and my Mom talk about how they all love their post-pregnancy bodies. We or anyone at that shouldn't be that hard on themselves. We shouldn't let society nor the media dictate on what we should or should not be.

    I love this post!

  16. We put to much pressure on ourselves to lose the baby weight. I think it is fantastic you were able to get back into a few pairs of your jeans. I never got back to my pre pregnancy weight but i am happy with where i am and i allow myself to have a treat when i want one.

  17. We do put a lot of pressure on ourselves after having a baby. It is great that you are getting yourself back to where you want to be. I was 115 before I had my first son. Now after third son I am 128. I like my body now. Stretch marks and all. I am still small but I got curves and hips now!

  18. Nothing wrong with yoga pants and leggings! I had the opposite problem... I almost immediately lost the pregnancy weight, but after a few months, gained it back!!

  19. This is great! I'll admit, it took me way longer than 9 months to get my weight off. It was more like three years. But, it was OK. We had stress with the NICU, stress coming home, and I was exhausted all the time. By the time I was motivated to do something, it was for my health mostly. Although, I do like fitting back into my clothes too.

  22. I agree with you 100%. Choose to be happy. Life is too short. Yoga pants rock too!

  23. Embrace the stretchy yoga pants! My son is 7 months old and I can fit into two pairs of pants from before I was pregnant with him. I bought myself some inexpensive pants in "in between" sizes so I could feel a little better about my appearance.

The main thing is that we, as moms, need to focus on our kids and not the scale or mirror.

  24. I was always scared to try my pre pregnancy clothes after the baby. I usually waited at least 6 weeks. With the last baby, I had some serious complications with my c-section wound not closing up. I didn't try anything until 3 or 4 months because of that problem.

  25. I love that Capri sees the beauty in herself when she looks in the mirror. Our children do too. I think we, as mothers, have something to learn from they way they look at themselves. It would be so nice to see beauty instead of letting the inner critic take over. It sounds like you are being kinder to yourself which is great. : 0 )

  26. It does take a while to feel comfortable after getting that nice round belly but it's a good memory so it's usually okay!

  27. This is a constant struggle. I just can't seem to find a balance where I'm comfortable in them daily.

  30. Loved this. That is why Jesus told us to be like little children. I found this the other day and loved it... so true.."Oh my God, what if you wake up some day, and you're 65, or 75, and you never got memoir or novel written; or you didn't go swimming in warm pools or oceans all those years because your thighs were jiggly and you had a nice big comfortable tummy; or you were just so strung out on perfectionism and people-pleasing that you that you forgot to have a big juicy creative life, of imagination and radical silliness and staring off into space like when you were a kid? its going to break your heart. Don't let this happen."
